Allan Taylor

Allan Taylor joined MetroNews in August 2012, following 18 years of newspaper, magazine and multimedia work as an SEC columnist, sports editor, assistant sports editor, managing editor, news reporter and media consultant (the last of which became an exhausting amalgamation of the rest).

Born and raised in Alabama, not quite an hour from the Gulf Coast, he misses crawfish and the beach culture but not the suffocating humidity.

A 1993 University of Alabama graduate, Allan was a journalism scholarship recipient and a failed baseball walk-on. He has won state and national honors for writing, reporting and section design, but most treasures the 1989 Class 5A state championship ring he helped earn by batting cleanup for Escambia County High. (He won’t pawn that thing, no matter how high the price of gold soars.)

His most enduring firsthand sports moments: Seeing Joe Torre and John Wetteland sob after the Yankees beat the Rangers in the 1996 ALDS, seeing Steelers players weep inside their locker room after losing to the Titans in the 2002 playoffs, seeing Dikembe Mutombo’s bare feet after a training camp practice (as big as diving fins).
